A 5,000-mile-long mass of sargassum has been slowing the boats as they race to Newport, Rhode Island. The Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt doesn’t just impact the teams, it affects wildlife, infrastructure and peoples’ health. The seaweed is increasing because of human activity. Tackling the climate crisis and using sustainable farming methods that prevent nutrients leaking into the environment could be key to helping reduce it.
