Day 2: Locals Continue to Shine as Fin and Foil Deliver Another Action-Packed Day in Bonaire
Day Two of the 2026 PWA Youth & Junior Slalom World Cup saw another full day of action on Lac Bay as the trade winds once again delivered perfect racing conditions.
The morning belonged to the fin fleet with three further eliminations completed across all age groups before attention switched to the foils in the afternoon as the wind got lighter.
In the U21 division, Germany’s Mario Boekstegers mounted an impressive comeback after a mixed opening day by claiming two victories from the three eliminations sailed. However, Bonairian Tycho Smits continues to lead the event after another consistent display and remains the man to beat heading into the weekend.
In the U17 fleet, the boys and girls are racing together, and Kit De Jong was the stand out in this fleet, regularly beating the boys across the finish line and establishing herself as one of the standout performers of the event so far. The U17 Boys saw a shake-up in the standings as Venezuela’s Adolfo Fernandez enjoyed an excellent day, taking two elimination wins and making a huge jump up the rankings. Despite not having his strongest day, local favourite Arxon Gomperts still retains the overall lead after two days of racing.
The U15 fleet remains one of the most closely contested divisions on the water. Kenny Abrahamsz continued his excellent form to strengthen his grip on the event lead, but Bonaire’s Julien Blom and Curaçao’s Adam Adriaans Tap stayed firmly in contention with another series of strong finishes.
The afternoon then saw the foil boards hit the water with five eliminations completed. The U21 boys foil racing proved particularly exciting with several close battles between Tycho Smits and Diederik Leemans as the pair traded blows throughout the afternoon.
In the girls’ fleets, Bobbi-Lynn de Jong currently leads the foil rankings, but younger sister Kit de Jong pushed her all the way and continues to impress with every elimination. The young Bonairian’s speed and consistency are marking her out as one of the brightest talents on the Youth Tour.
With another windy forecast on the cards, the stage is set for an exciting third day in Bonaire as several divisions remain wide open. Skippers Meeting is set for 8:30am with a First Possible Start at 9:30.
