Day 1 of Slalom X delivered exactly what Fuerteventura is famous for as howling winds, rolling swell and brutal chop pushed the world’s best racers to their limits. Survival was often just as important as outright speed, with the demanding outside gybe marks catching out even the most experienced sailors.
Jenna Gibson made the perfect start to the women’s event, winning the opening three eliminations before a crash in the fourth race denied her a clean sweep. Nevertheless, the Brit ends the day firmly in control ahead of reigning Foil Slalom World Champion Justine Lemeteyer, while Mae Davico and Femke van der Veen remain well within striking distance.
In the men’s fleet, Matteo Iachino laid down an early marker with back-to-back elimination victories to claim a perfect score and establish himself as the man to beat. Defending World Champion Pierre Mortefon sits second after two composed runner-up finishes, while Taty Frans completes the overnight top three.
With four days still to come and another windy forecast on the horizon, the battle for both world titles is only just getting started.
