One Man Protects the Lost Gorillas in Cameroon | Bama and the Lost Gorillas | Documentary

Fewer than 300 Cross River gorillas remain. Join one man on a perilous journey to find their last hidden families before they vanish forever.

They are the rarest great apes on Earth — the Cross River gorillas living in the remote border region between Cameroon and Nigeria. For decades, almost nothing was known about their lives in the wild. This documentary follows animal keeper Alfred “Bama” Balmer and his extraordinary bond with Niango, the only Cross River gorilla ever raised in captivity.

At the Limbe Wildlife Centre in Cameroon, Bama has spent over 15 years caring for orphaned gorillas whose mothers were killed by poachers. When he discovers that Niango may still have family surviving deep in the rainforest, he sets out on a dangerous expedition into unexplored mountain forests to find them.

His journey leads through villages, sacred traditions, deforestation zones, and some of the last untouched rainforests of Central Africa. Along the way, Bama uncovers the complex relationship between people, poverty, belief systems, and wildlife conservation — and witnesses animals found nowhere else on Earth.

Against all odds, the mission results in a historic breakthrough: the first-ever footage of Cross River gorillas feeding in the wild. A moment of hope for a species on the brink of extinction.

A powerful story about trust between species, conservation under pressure, and one man’s determination to protect the rarest gorillas before it’s too late.
