20 seconds to go before the start of the winners final of the final elimination and the riders were lining up for the start. Pierre Mortefon and Amado Vrieswijk crashed into each other – both of them breaking their gear. For Pierre, he dropped of both the event and overall podium. For Amado, with Pierre now off the podium, his World title hopes were ended.
Amado still won the event in Japan, but with Matteo up to 3rd in the event rankings after a win in the final, that was enough to force the tiebreak and Amado lost on countback.
It was heartbreak for both riders and not how you want to end the season 💔
