The USS Kittiwake is one of the most famous wreck dives in the Caribbean, but few divers know the incredible Cold War story behind it.
In this episode of DiveSAGA, we travel to Grand Cayman to explore the wreck of the USS Kittiwake and uncover the secret mission that defined her nearly 50 years of service with the U.S. Navy.
Why did the ship carry diving bells, massive floating pontoons, compressed gas systems, and multiple hyperbaric chambers? The answer lies in her role as a submarine rescue vessel, standing by to assist disabled submarines and trapped crews anywhere in the world.
Together with DiveTech Grand Cayman and local wreck expert Stephen Aynsley, we dive through the Kittiwake’s engine rooms, gas banks, mess hall, decompression chambers, and submarine rescue systems to reveal how this remarkable vessel operated during the Cold War.
Today, the USS Kittiwake rests in crystal-clear water off Seven Mile Beach, transformed into one of the world’s premier wreck dives and artificial reefs.
