Hidden beneath the jungles of Muna Island in Indonesia lies a cave system so large that it was only recently confirmed to be the longest known underwater cave in Southeast Asia.

In this episode of the Caves of Sulawesi series, cave divers Nick Derutter and Chaca explore Laulawi Cave, a massive flooded limestone labyrinth with more than 5.2 kilometers (3.2 miles) of mapped underwater passage. Using underwater scooters (DPVs), they travel deep into one of Indonesia’s most significant cave systems, documenting vast chambers, restrictions, underground rivers, and spectacular cave formations.
Laulawi Cave gained international attention during Expedition Buteng, a scientific expedition that mapped over 5 kilometers of submerged passages and studied the cave’s geology, hydrology, and importance as a freshwater source for Muna Island.
