⛵ GOLDEN GLOBE RACE 2026 | ERTAN BESKARDES – WEEKLY CALL
🌊 40-knot winds, 5-metre waves, and life is still good aboard MISS BEAGLE!
While other Golden Globe Race skippers faced severe Southern Atlantic weather, Ertan Beskardes made a calculated decision to stay near 28°S for almost two days, avoiding the worst of the storm.
He still encountered winds of 30–40 knots and seas of 4–5 metres, but his careful approach paid off. Both Ertan and MISS BEAGLE are doing well!
In this week’s call, Ertan shares:
⛵ Storm survival: Why he sacrificed two days to protect his boat and avoid the worst weather.
🌍 His own race, his own way: Ertan has no idea where he stands in the fleet — and he loves it! He’s following his own route towards 42°S.
💧 Water management: With approximately 450 litres of water carried aboard, he’s carefully saving 200 litres for the final months after Cape Horn.
📻 A week without hearing the fleet: Ertan has struggled to hear fellow competitors on the radio, but the BBC World Service keeps him entertained for hours every day.
🍟 Cooking in the Southern Atlantic: Pasta, tomatoes, garlic, cheese, homemade chips and curry! Ertan certainly isn’t going hungry.
😴 Sleeping like a baby: Life aboard is surprisingly comfortable, except when light winds leave the sails flapping!
⛵ Protecting MISS BEAGLE: Ertan explains why he reefs early, sometimes an hour before threatening weather arrives, to keep his boat safe for the long voyage ahead.
Despite the challenges of sailing solo around the world, Ertan remains cheerful, relaxed and determined.
