Bats are the second largest group of mammals on Earth. With around 1,400 species, one in five known mammals is a bat. This wildlife documentary explores the hidden world of bats: how they navigate by echolocation, how they raise their young, how they migrate across continents and why their populations are declining.
From the bumblebee bat, the smallest mammal in the world, to flying foxes with wingspans of nearly two metres, bats have adapted to almost every habitat except the poles. This documentary visits volcanic caves in Kenya, dry forests in India, tidal sea caves off West Africa, the Amazon rainforest and the Zambian forests of Kasanka National Park, where millions of straw coloured fruit bats gather for the longest mammal migration in Africa.
You will see how microbats control insect pests, including mosquitoes, and how fruit bats pollinate plants and disperse seeds. A single fruit bat can spread around 60,000 seeds in one night. You will also see the predators that hunt bats, from peregrine falcons to spotted eagle owls, and the animals that share their roosts, from baboons to sloth bears.
The film also covers the threats facing bats today: deforestation, habitat loss, hunting, pesticides, climate change and the spread of disease. Several species shown here are listed as near threatened, vulnerable or critically endangered, including the Christmas Island flying fox.
Topics in this documentary: bat biology, echolocation, bat colonies, bat roosts, bat caves, fruit bats, flying foxes, microbats, megabats, bat migration, bat reproduction, bat conservation, endangered bats, pollination, seed dispersal, nocturnal animals, bats and zoonotic disease.
