Come dive the SS Saganaga with us.
No narration. No talking. Just the sound of our bubbles, the North Atlantic and atmospheric music as we explore one of Newfoundland’s remarkable Second World War shipwrecks.
On September 5, 1942, the British merchant steamer SS Saganaga was lying at anchor near Bell Island, Newfoundland, fully loaded with iron ore when she was attacked by the German submarine U-513. Two torpedoes struck the ship, sending her to the bottom of Conception Bay and killing 29 members of her crew.
Built in Glasgow, Scotland in 1935, the Saganaga now rests on the seabed off Bell Island and has become one of Newfoundland and Labrador’s most extraordinary wreck-diving sites.
This is Dive 1 of our exploration of the Saganaga. Rather than simply showing you highlights, we wanted to give you the feeling of actually joining us underwater and discovering the wreck as we do.
On this dive we explore part of the Saganaga’s enormous remains, swim through a landscape covered in colourful marine growth and coral, and encounter some of Newfoundland’s spectacular cold-water marine life including a lion’s mane jellyfish and lumpfish.
We’re diving with our friends John Olivero and Jason Sooley of Ocean Quest Adventures, one of Newfoundland and Labrador’s premier scuba diving and adventure operators.
Ocean Quest has been introducing divers to the Bell Island WWII wrecks and the waters of Newfoundland since 1997 and operates wreck-diving charters, scuba training and other ocean adventures.
