After the Golden Globe Race 2018; 2022, Ocean Globe Race 2022, now McIntyre Adventures presents another amazing around the world yacht race - The Mini Globe Race 2025 starting in February 2025.

Since the launch of the Class Globe 5.80, over 230 people in more than 37 countries have purchased plans to build their own 19-foot plywood 'mini' yacht. The '5.80' refers to its length in metres, which is compact enough to be shipped in a 20-foot container to and from international events.

Conceived by Australian adventurer Don McIntyre and designed by Polish sailor and designer Janusz Maderski, this new class of 'mini' yacht opens up exciting new possibilities for adventurous and affordable ocean racing.

In 2025, a group of brave adventurers will race their 5.80 yachts solo around the world. The Mini Globe Race will start on 23 February 2025 and will be divided into five legs:

• Leg One: Start of the race from Antigua to Panama;
• Leg Two: Panama to Fiji via Tahiti and Tonga;
• Leg Three: Fiji to Cape Town via Darwin, Cocos Islands, Mauritius and Durban;
• Leg Four: Cape Town to Recife, Brazil via St Helena;
• Leg Five: Recife, Brazil to Antigua.

The race covers 28,000 miles and is limited to 20 entrants from around the world. It should take around a year to complete.

There are no restrictions on satellite media access or the transmission of pictures and updates to the media. Entrants can post pictures from on board and manage their own social media from their boats. This openness allows for real-time coverage and engagement, bringing the excitement of the race to audiences worldwide. Join us as we redefine adventure on a global scale!

A #GGR2022, documentary "THE LONELIEST RACE" explores the emotional and physical trials of underdogs who struggle at sea for 300 days in the Golden Globe Race.

Sadly, while a good film, it DOES NOT tell the true story. Entrant Tapio Lehtinen, GGR2018 veteran and GGR2022 entrant, is not seen in the film at all as if he was not entered. The sinking of his yacht ASTERIA in mysterious circumstances and subsequent rescue by Kirsten Neuschäfer, the winner of the GGR2022, is not mentioned at all. Fathom were given exclusive access and the right to produce the 'Official Film' of the GGR. The result in this sense is disappointing. Discussions are ongoing to rectify this unfortunate omission.

PREMIER BROADCAST SCREENING IN CANADA..CBC Passionate Eye – October 9, 2024
Set against the backdrop of the world's most punishing seas, The Loneliest Race is an intimate documentary that delves into the emotional and physical trials of sixteen sailors in the Golden Globe Race. This non-stop, 50,000 km solo sailing race from Les Sables d'Olonne in FRANCE, is the world’s longest and most mentally grueling sporting event, pushing competitors to the limit with no fuel, no technology, and complete isolation. Only six sailors have ever successfully completed the GGR.

Starting and finishing in France, they navigate the Atlantic, Indian, Pacific, and Southern Oceans with nine months' worth of food, rainwater for drinking, and only the stars for navigation. Mostly amateur sailors, the documentary gets intimate access to participants, including Kirsten Neuschäfer, the race’s sole woman, who has navigated the Southern Ocean countless times; Abhilash Tomy, a former Indian Naval Commander who nearly lost his life in the 2018 race; and Ian HJ Sailing Golden Globe Race Ian Herbert-Jones, a sailing hobbyist who ends up risking his life in pursuit of a personal dream.

The Golden Age of sailing continues with the fourth edition of the original Sunday Times Golden Globe Race. A fully reviewed Notice of Race, an increased following, new approved designs and a limit of seven boats of the same type will make the GGR 2026 even more interesting.

The Golden Globe remains totally unique in the world of sailing and stands alone as the longest, loneliest, slowest, most daring challenge for an individual in any sport.

Don McIntyre loves flying anything. He and Margie sold their Maule 180 Tri Gear, four seat Stoll aircraft, to help fund their year living in Antarctica in 1995. He still owns a part built "Kitfox classic IV" ultralight on amphibious Floats, bought in 1997. Don intended to use it in an historic flight re-enactment of the first flight around Australia. That was in 1924 by another McIntyre and Gobels, in a "Fairey" IIID float plane.

When building 'ICE" in China, provision was made to carry a "Polaris FIB", flying inflatable boat. He bought one in Italy and while getting a new ultralight "Weight shift" licence to fly the Polaris, he saw a very impressive German Gyro-copter. Don always declared that he would never fly a Gyrocopter, as too many people had been killed flying them, including Jacques-Yves Cousteau's son. But this was very impressive German engineering and design. After a 20 minute flight he was hooked. To him this was flying in its most pure, fun form. The German manufacture and local importer were planning a flight around Australia in a few months and invited Don to join them. 10 flying hours later he had a licence, so bought his own machine. He applied the same VH flight registration numbers and decals, as carried by McIntyre and Gobels in their historic flight. Another 25 hours training and they set off around Australia by the furthest East, North, West and Southern most points.

It was demanding, exhilarating, fun, spectacular flying and just seven days later they were nearly half way round. The other two gave up shortly after, so Don continued on Solo and claimed the World First record on a fight that lasted 115 hours in the air, over 22 days and covering 13,000 KM. During the 12 months surrounding that flight, eight people in Australia killed themselves in gyrocopters.

After eight years of total commitment, blood sweat and tears, Don & Margie McIntyre finally launched the 50ft "SPONSOR WANTED" and sailed to the start of the BOC challenge in New Port, Rhode Island USA. They had also built Japanese friend and fellow competitor Minoru Saito's boat 'Shuten Dojhi II" (Minoru in that boat, ultimately sailed a total of seven solo circumnavigations together). Massive support from friends and business got them to the start line, but still with over $300,000 of debt. 46 days after the start Don arrived in Cape town. At the half way point in Sydney after another 34 days through the Southern Ocean, where he was knocked down many times by giant waves, finances were critical and no one was sure he could keep sailing. Fortunately Buttercup Bakeries and support from Derryn Hinch and channel 7 kept the dream alive! With a new name "BUTTERCUP" Don set out for Cape Horn. Huge storms swept through the Fleet. He was on one occasion rolled 360 degrees, but his well built and prepared vessel survived, arriving in Punta del Est 39 days later, relieved to be out of the Southern Ocean. In the final Leg back to New Port, Don suffered a broken forestay, but went on to
take second place in his class, with a total elapsed time of 153 days, 12 hours, 21 minutes. It was an epic 27,000 voyage with all the excitement and drama you would imagine. Don was the 98th person ever in history, to sail solo around the world. At that time there had been nearly three times that many people rocket into space! He gained a massive following in Australia produced an epic documentary of his race and started planning to do it again in 1994!

The Ocean Globe Race 2023 has begun! History was made on the 10 September as the cannons of the Royal Yacht Squadron, Cowes, signalled the start of the inaugural McIntyre Ocean Globe, mirroring the original 1973 Whitbread Round the World Race. Hundreds of spectator boats witnessed the stunning scenes as the 14 iconic yachts crossed the start line en route to Cape Town. With seven former Whitbread yachts amongst the fleet, the OGR has its roots firmly in sailing history, but is also now looking to the future for sailors chasing adventure and a life less ordinary.
