The countdown is ON. In just 9 months, on 6 September 2026, a unique human adventure will start again from Les Sables d’Olonne – the Golden Globe Race 2026. 🌍⛵

No GPS. No outside assistance. Paper charts, sextant, HF radio, and months of total isolation. Every mile sailed is powered only by the skipper and the wind. It’s not the biggest race in the world – but it is one of the toughest mind games on the planet… and completely unlike anything else.

In this unscripted video, recorded during the GGR2026 Entrants Get-Together in Les Sables d’Olonne, Race Founder Don McIntyre introduces the race, its history and – most importantly – the people behind it.

You’ll hear about:

The roots of the Golden Globe Race:

1968: 9 starters, 1 finisher

2018: 18 starters, 5 finishers

2022: 16 starters, 3 finishers

Why the GGR is “simply unique” – a brutal, beautiful test of human resilience and seamanship

Les Sables d’Olonne as the world center of solo round-the-world sailing

Then we meet the GGR2026 entrants – a true “family” of adventurers from all over the world:

Young guns & wise veterans – from 21-year-old Lewis to seasoned sailors returning for another attempt

Ex-military, doctors, engineers, filmmakers, teachers and ocean rowers

Two inspiring women skippers, hoping to encourage even more women onto the start line

Sailors racing for personal dreams, for charities, and for causes close to their hearts – including disabled children and veteran mental health

Skippers rebuilding classic boats, sailing famous previous GGR yachts, and even finishing boats they’ve been building for 8+ years just to make the start

You’ll catch short introductions from:
🇮🇪 Pat Lawless – aiming to turn the “7 years” of Brendan the Navigator into 7 months around the world
🇮🇹 Guido Cantini – back after life got in the way in 2022, finally bringing Hannah of Cowes to the start
🇳🇴 Mara – excited to be one of two women on the line and sharing her qualification via a live-streamed Atlantic crossing
🇬🇧 Lewis – the youngest entrant, full-time on the boat after university, inspired others just by knocking on a hull and sharing a beer
🇹🇷 Salem – orthopedic surgeon turned circumnavigator, sailing for disabled children worldwide
🇨🇭 Etienne – from bright Mini 580 winner to Trade Wind 35 skipper in the big adventure
🏴 Andrew – the “mad Scotsman”, outdoor educator for school kids, now going all-in on the Southern Ocean
🇺🇸 / 🇩🇰 Gunnar – back in after almost pulling out, sailing his “mighty pumpkin”
🇸🇪 Per – Swedish doctor chasing a lifelong dream of the Southern Ocean
🇮🇹 Andrea – “freshwater sailor” from Milan turned solo ocean wanderer
🇺🇦/🇩🇪 Oleg – determined nonstop circumnavigator on an OE32
🌊 Erden – legendary ocean rower, first to row the three oceans, now refitting Clara for the GGR
🇨🇦 Edward – back with Noah’s Jest after 20,000+ solo miles of preparation
🇫🇷 Damien (via his team manager Sam) – professional racer returning to finish the job after 2022
🇺🇸 Colin Walker – US veteran sailing Múċúisla for Wisdom Dojo, supporting veterans’ post-traumatic growth

…and many more skippers briefly introduced whether in the room or away at sea training.

This video is pure, unpolished GGR energy:
👉 Real people, real fears, real dreams
👉 Laughter, nerves, and a strong sense of family
👉 A reminder that the true definition of adventure is “any activity with an unknown outcome”

📅 Race Start: 6 September 2026 – Les Sables d’Olonne, France

“Sometimes the sea is stormy and there are waves…” 🌊

GGR2026 entrant Daniel Pinsky takes his new boat Exodus into a “storm of monstrous scale” – alone, on a yacht he barely knows, in conditions building to 40–45 knots and huge seas.

In this raw clip, filmed in the first hours of the blow, the sails are already coming down one by one. Soon after, Daniel will spend almost 18 hours straight on the helm, hand on the tiller, with just one thought in his mind:

“All I could think was to survive.”

This is not a tutorial video and not the full debrief – Daniel will share a detailed technical breakdown later. This is a real-time taste of what it feels like when a few wrong decisions, some bad luck, and serious weather all line up… and you’re out there alone.

He knows the criticism will come – and he accepts it. The Golden Globe Race is about learning, adapting, and owning both mistakes and successes in the harshest classroom on earth: the ocean. 🌍⛵

⚠️ Disclaimer:
Daniel does not recommend anyone put themselves into a storm like this. He is preparing for conditions he fully expects to meet in the Golden Globe Race 2026, and he has taken away valuable lessons from this experience.

👉 Watch to the end to feel the power of the sea, the scale of the waves, and the mindset it takes to keep going when things get serious.

From Daniel Pinsky ( 35, ISRAEL #GGR2026 provisional entrant) First Sail with his New #GGR2026 Boat! BOB PERRY’s BABA 35 “Exodus”:

What a day! My first sail aboard “Exodus,” my new Baba 35 designed by Bob Perry — and what an introduction to life at sea.

The wind, the waves, and a few “wow” moments made this first date unforgettable. From battling headwinds all day to deciding whether to anchor or keep sailing through the night… this is real sailing life, raw and unfiltered.

As the sun sets low over the water, I’m learning every sound, every move, every breath of my new home at sea. The auto-pilot groans, the sea calms, and I sail on through the night toward Deltaville, dreaming of that first morning coffee at anchor.

Come along for the first sail of Exodus — a taste of what’s to come on my road (or wave) to the Golden Globe Race 2026. 🌍⛵

Elliott Smith was the youngest entrant in the 2022 McIntyre Golden Globe Race — a solo, non-stop, unassisted round-the-world challenge using only technology available in 1968.

At just 27 years old, the American sailor set out aboard his Gale Force 34 Second Wind, bringing determination, grit, and a sense of adventure to the longest and loneliest race in the world.

American sailor Guy deBoer set out in the 2022 McIntyre Golden Globe Race aboard his Tashiba 36 Spirit, chasing a lifelong dream of solo, non-stop circumnavigation.

After departing the Lanzarote film drop, disaster struck just hours later when Spirit ran aground off Fuerteventura. Though his race came to an abrupt end, Guy was uninjured. Rebuilding Spirit from the ground up, Guy now sets his sights on the 2026 Golden Globe Race.

French skipper Damien Guillou entered the 2022 McIntyre Golden Globe Race with high hopes and strong preparation. But persistent problems with his wind vane self-steering plagued his voyage, forcing repeated repairs and slowing his progress. On November 14, 2022, he returned to Cape Town and officially retired from the race.

With unfinished business at sea, Damien has already announced his return for the 2026 edition of the race.

Australian sailor Mark “Captain Coconut” Sinclair returned for a second attempt in the 2022 McIntyre Golden Globe Race. Sailing his orange Lello 34, "Coconut", Mark set out once more to take on the challenge of a solo, non-stop circumnavigation.

After retiring in September 2022 at Lanzarote, Mark went on to skipper Swan 57 "Explorer" in the 2023 Ocean Globe Race, completing another circumnavigation. Today, he is back aboard Coconut, shadowing the Globe 5.80 Mini Globe Race fleet on their own voyage around the world — still chasing horizons, and still part of the story of solo sailing.

Turkish-born British sailor Ertan Beskardes returned to the 2022 McIntyre Golden Globe Race after retiring just days into the 2018 edition. Determined to complete a solo, non-stop circumnavigation, he set out once more aboard his Rustler 36, Lazy Otter.

After passing the Cape Town Gate in 7th place, Ertan made the unexpected decision to retire from the race, citing the toll of isolation and missing his family. But his story didn’t end there - he continues to chase his circumnavigation dream aboard his 19ft Globe 5.80, Trekka, in the McIntyre Mini Globe Race 2025.

French skipper Arnaud Gaist set out in the 2022 McIntyre Golden Globe Race aboard his Barbican 33 MkII, Hermès Phoning. For him, the race was as much about the spirit of adventure as the competition - a test of simplicity, solitude, and self-reliance.

After leaving Lanzarote, Arnaud settled into life at sea, but soon faced mounting challenges: barnacles slowing him down and eventually a compromised mast. With progress impossible, he made the difficult decision to abandon his circumnavigation and sail back towards France - a homeward voyage that would take a further 150 days.

Jeremy Bagshaw, a solo sailor from South Africa, competed in the 2022 McIntyre Golden Globe Race — a round-the-world challenge using only technology available in 1968.

Sailing the smallest boat in the fleet, his OE32 Olleanna, Jeremy faced relentless obstacles: barnacle growth slowing his progress, scarce food and water supplies, and gear failures along the way.

Midway through the race, he was forced to make a stop in Hobart, Tasmania to clean his hull, which placed him in the Chichester Class for one-stop circumnavigators. But he pressed on undeterred, battling storms and isolation across the oceans.

On 9 June 2023, after 277 days at sea, Jeremy crossed the finish line in Les Sables-d’Olonne — the fifth and final skipper to complete the Golden Globe Race 2022.

Simon Curwen was the standout sailor of the 2022 McIntyre Golden Globe Race — a solo, non-stop, unassisted circumnavigation using only technology available in 1968.

An experienced offshore yachtsman from the UK, Simon grew up inspired by Sir Francis Chichester and Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, dreaming of one day completing his own round-the-world voyage. That dream became reality when he set out from Les Sables-d’Olonne aboard his Biscay 36, Clara.

From the very beginning Simon was the man to beat, building a commanding lead in the race. But in the Southern Ocean, disaster struck: his self-steering system broke in a knockdown just west of Cape Horn. Forced to divert to Puerto Montt, Chile, he was reclassified into the Chichester Class (one stop circumnavigation) and no longer able to win the race.

Undeterred, Simon repaired his boat and continued sailing, returning to Les Sables in April 2023 ahead of the rest of the fleet — the first skipper home, and a sailor who more than fulfilled his boyhood dream.

In 1968, The Sunday Times Golden Globe Race was the first ever around-the-world solo yacht race.
Known at the time as a voyage for madmen, lives were forever changed – yachts sank, a suicide occurred and of the nine entries only one man finished – Sir Robin Knox-Johnston becoming the first person ever to sail solo, nonstop and unassisted around the globe.

No other race has occurred like it in half a century.

The Voyage of Madmen is the story of Don McIntyre’s 50 year anniversary recreation of the infamous race and his quest to attract amateur sailors to compete in small boats, taking on the perils of the sea entirely against the odds. It’s a race without modern technological aids where actually surviving a non-stop lap of the world is the achievement. Of the 18 solo sailors to depart France in 2018 – five solitary skippers cross the finish line – the final finisher spending 322 days alone at sea.

This is the story of the longest sporting event in history. A display of brutal individualism by characters longing for a by-gone era who are hell-bent on recreating the longest, loneliest and most gruelling sports event on the planet.

This film is an independent production funded entirely by Don & Jane - "McIntyre Adventure"...we have not yet been able to sell it to mainstream media or TV ..only a few hire and buy sales...For the past 10 Years we have invested heavily in supporting adventure ..the Golden Globe, Ocean Globe and Mini Globe Races and the ALMA Class Globe 580 one design mini. All this basically without major sponsors or external funding. We withheld the public release of this amazing film for two years , hoping to sell it for mass distribution...We are still trying!....but with the fourth edition of the McIntyre GGR starting Sept 6 2026 again from Les Sables d'Olonne and knowing many people around the world would be inspired watching this amazing human story, we cannot hide it any longer...Thanks to all the friends, volunteers and partners who helped make adventure and film possible.PLEASE TELL ALL YOUR FRIENDS about it.......we hope you enjoy the film.

If you would like to support our adventures, please follow , subscribe, comment and share 🙂 ..it helps a lot! THANKS!...The 2018 edition of the GGR will go down in history for many reasons. This is a tribute to the 18 sailors who risked all to follow a simple dream!” – Don & Jane

Veteran Finnish Sailor Tapio Lehtinen returned for his second Golden Globe Race in 2022 — a solo, non-stop, unassisted round-the-world sailing challenge using only technology available in 1968. His race ended dramatically when his boat Asteria sank in the Southern Indian Ocean.

The untold story of ASTERIA’s sinking and Tapio Lehtinen’s RESCUE! A Short film released today on YOUTUBE!

On NOV 18th, 2022, at around 0700hrs Tapio Lehtinen woke to a loud crash from the back of his beloved ASTERIA. He was 450 miles off the coast of South Africa racing in the solo McIntyre Golden Globe Race around the world. Out of his bunk he stood in knee deep water with more flooding in from under the engine. Six minutes later, grabbing what he could and donning his survival suit, he lunged into his life raft. Shortly after, he gave his old friend ASTERIA a final salute, as she slipped silently and surreally stern first below the waves of the Southern Ocean.

He was alone in his life raft. His emergency sat phone had a broken antenna. The PLB packed in his raft was working, but the EPIRB went down with the ship. The GGR organisers were stunned, but with Cape Town MRCC alerted, swung into action. He was ultimately rescued by fellow entrant Kirsten Neuschäfer who went on to win the McIntyre GGR and global recognition. This RESCUE was an amazing story and is now the subject of a short film “ASTERIA’S FINAL VOYAGE” released today on Youtube.

The organiser of the GGR Don McIntyre had entered into an agreement with Fathom Films, a Canadian production company to produce a documentary based on the 2022 edition of the Race. Three boats were lost during this gruelling eight-month adventure around the world and only three of the original 16 starters finished the Race. It was an epic story waiting to be told, but for some unexplained reason, Fathom Films decided to remove Tapio Lehtinen from the GGR in their film “The Loneliest Race”. He simply was not mentioned. He did not exist. The sinking and subsequent rescue by the winner of the GGR did not happen. Tapio was simply cancelled.

"I objected to the producers explaining that without Tapio their film lacked integrity and honesty. The Producer suggested they just wanted a character piece and there were enough characters without telling Tapio's story. I was stunned and shocked. They launched the film without him” said Don McIntyre, “It’s a good film, but it tells a lie by what is not there. As the organiser we cannot endorse it as the “Official Film” of the 2022 GGR. I felt so sad for Tapio and his team. I had an agreement with Fathom Films and they did not deliver, but no point fighting, so instead we produced this short film “ASTERIA’S FINAL VOYAGE” to tell the untold story.”

To complement this short film about Tapio, McIntyre Adventure is now producing a 16-part short film series of “2022 GGR Skipper Stories” one episode for each entrant and one being released every week starting today. Available on the Golden Globe Race YouTube channel HERE.

Katy Stickland from Practical Boat Owner magazine had a sneak peak of this new McIntyre Adventure series and had this to say…

"These absorbing and captivating GGR Skipper Stories are packed with never-before-seen footage which puts you in the heart of the race and reveal new insights into the hardships and sheer joy experienced by those taking part in one of the toughest yacht races on earth. Couldn't tear my eyes away from the screen."

WHY DID ASTERIA SINK?

If you would like to know more, there was a full investigation and two hour discussion from various experts at the time. You can watch this detailed technical analysis here. At the end of the day there was NO PROVEN ANSWER.

Confused about how a windvane works? Don McIntyre breaks it down—simple and clear!

In this video, Don shares rare classroom footage from #GGR2018 at Marina Rubicon, where he explains the difference between servo-pendulum systems and auxiliary rudder windvanes—perfect for anyone new to ocean sailing or just curious how self-steering really works.

Then, jump aboard a Beneteau Oceanis 423 for "2000 Miles Under Bimini"—a recent voyage from Papeete to Fiji—as Don shows how the Hydrovane performs underway and on the hard in Fiji.

🎓 Perfect for aspiring bluewater cruisers, weekend sailors, and even "thick people" ( Youtube comments / words! 🙂 who want to learn how to cruise hands-free.

Introduction to Using a Windvane Self-Steering System

Windvane self-steering systems are essential for long-distance sailors, offering reliable, energy-independent course-keeping without relying on electric autopilots. These systems use wind direction to steer the boat, adjusting automatically as conditions change. There are two main types:

Auxiliary Rudder Systems – A separate rudder steers the boat independently of the ship’s main rudder.

Servo-Pendulum Systems – A windvane controls the boat’s primary rudder via lines connected to the wheel or tiller.

How a Windvane Works
The key component is the flip-flop windvane, which acts like a weathervane. When the boat strays off course, wind pressure pushes the vane to one side, turning the rudder (auxiliary) or activating pendulum movement (servo) to correct the heading.

Basic Steps to Engage a Windvane:
Set the Windvane Angle – Adjust the vane to align with your desired wind angle (e.g., beam reach, downwind).

Lock the Ship’s Rudder – For auxiliary systems, secure the main rudder to prevent interference.

Balance the Sails – Proper sail trim reduces strain on the system.

Fine-Tune Sensitivity – Many systems allow gear adjustments (like "gears" in a car) to control rudder response.

Auxiliary systems (like Hydrovane) also serve as emergency rudders, while servo-pendulum systems (like Aries) steer via the boat’s main rudder. Both require practice but provide unmatched reliability on ocean passages.

For a deeper dive, watch the full explanation here or check out practical demonstrations on setup and gear adjustments.

Fair winds and steady steering! ⛵

🎙️ Marie’s words (AI-translated):

“Speed is safety. You must keep the sail up.”

“We averaged 270 miles a day… sometimes surfing at 28.3 knots.”

“At Cape Horn, the sea calms—but before that… it’s chaos.”

“You realize the immensity of the ocean standing atop a 10-meter wave.”

Cape Horn passage (Feb 6)

Translated 9 & Gitana close chase

Hugo’s birthday surprise 🎈

AI Translation for Marie's speech in the video: So, the Guardi passage is almost our only source of weather updates. It's done by amateur radio operators who volunteer to provide weather updates to those crossing the Pacific. It happens that today we have a serious weather alert for the passage, with winds between 40 and 60 knots.

Potentially 10 meters high waves announced.

The weather is worsening, but we also receive weather updates through maps. We try to get the maps, but they're quite rudimentary. The sea is starting to get rough, and the swell is deepening. At some point, the wind stabilized between 40 knots, 45 knots, to 50 knots, then from 50 to 60 knots before dropping back to 50. It kept rising and falling, and the waves, well, there were waves and swells, some breaking waves, and the boat started to surf. We averaged about 12 knots throughout this low pressure area, which amounts to approximately 270 nautical miles per day. We had beautiful days of consistent surfing between 20 and 23 knots. There was even a surf at 28.3 knots, which I think scared us all. We were all very frightened, but the boat on fire completely. Indeed, the sea was very rough, so the challenge was to keep the boat aligned and manage the waves coming from port or starboard, which could easily catch the stern of the boat and make us broach. In such conditions, it's crucial to keep sail up; speed is safety, so you must keep the sail up and move the boat as fast as possible to control and not be overwhelmed by the swell. Instead, know where to position yourself, maintain speed in the trough of a wave, and be ready to tackle the next wave with good speed. Steering was very challenging; those who are cold once they're at the helm usually warm up in a few seconds because of this, plus the stress of being at the helm. And yeah, there are moments when you feel quite small, especially at the top of a wave, 7 to 10 meters high, looking at the vast ocean. It's really when you're at the top of the wave that you realize the immensity of the sea. And then, we're at the Horn, not just anywhere in the world. We know we're approaching Cape Horn, and once we leave this low pressure area on February 6th at 6 AM, we pass Cape Horn. The crew passing Cape Horn isn't that difficult because when you arrive, the sea is calm, and there's no wind. The challenge is before reaching Cape Horn; passing it is the reward. We passed Cape Horn under excellent conditions with an incredible sunrise. It was the first sunrise in Patagonia, just sublime. And well, the Transled team was still there, passing Cape Horn a few hours after us. From Cape Horn, we started our ascent of the Atlantic towards Punta del Este, passing a place called the Strait of the Sea, west of the Falkland Islands, also known as the Malvinas. Our friends from Translated9 also followed us closely in the Strait of the Sea, overtaken by Char Cordrelier and Gitana, who are also completing their circumnavigation. So, we won our bet, arriving before the Ultimes. At Cape Horn, it was nice; we got to talk a bit with Charles and will meet up in Lorient. It wouldn't be us without the craziness of our crew. We must talk about Hugo's birthday, where the animation team got involved and managed to have a water balloon fight while outside there.

GGR SKIPPER STORIES! We are excited to announce a new McIntyre Golden Globe Documentary series. Over the next 16 weeks, every Saturday, a new episode will be released, giving a unique insight to the sailors of this gruelling human story, a race of attrition and total isolation that pushes each sailor to the absolute limit of their physical and psychological endurance, offering many reasons to retire, but only one reason to finish! We hope you enjoy this short film series. Please share it to friends. Thanks... Don & Jane 🤩🥳 #ggr2026

Pat Lawless made history as the first Irish entrant in the McIntyre Golden Globe Race — a solo, non-stop, unassisted round-the-world sailing challenge using only technology available in 1968.

A retired fisherman and carpenter from Kerry, Pat took on the 2022 edition of the race in memory of his father, who became the first Irishman to sail solo around the world in 1996. Sailing aboard Green Rebel, Pat battled storms, isolation, and mechanical failure in one of the world’s most demanding sporting events.

But 1,200 miles west of Cape Town, disaster struck. A critical failure in his self-steering system made it unsafe to continue. Forced to retire, Pat made landfall in South Africa — but not before proving his determination, seamanship, and spirit.

In this short documentary, Pat reflects on his experience, his motivation, and his plans to return for the 2026 race — sailing to raise funds for Parkinson’s Ireland.
