The five point ascent is often overlooked, but it covers many important points before ascending:
S- signal to your buddy it is time to ascend
T- check your technology to ensure your safety stop is complete
E- elevate your low pressure inflator and deflate small amounts on the way up
L/L- look and listen above to check for boat traffic before ascending
A- ascent! Keep an arm above your head to break the water first!
