How to prevent seasickness on a dive boat 🛥️ 🤮 #scubadiving #seasick #howto

Here are my top tips for preventing seasickness:
1) It’s usually a combination of remedies, & ya gotta do it in advance (prep goes a long way).
🗓️

2) Seasick meds come in many forms, but they usually do work. They typically don’t do a lot once you get seasick, so try some stuff out in advance as long as there are no medical contraindications. (Seabands, patches, gum, meclizine, etc).
💊

3) Keep your eyes out on the horizon as much as possible.
🏝️

4) Avoid looking at things up close or being inside. Early gear prep and organization is key.
👀

5) Stay near the middle of the boat, usually toward the stern (especially if under way).
🛥️

6) Avoid spending time where the diesel / fumes are swirling (usually in the back).
💨

7) Ginger is something many swear by, whether it be ginger ale, chews, or candy – if it works for you, go for it.
🫚

8) Avoid sitting. Your body will absorb all the boat’s motion more directly. It’s much better to stand so your legs absorb some of the movement.
🐥

9) Sunglasses can make it worse for some, consider keeping them off while under way.
😎

10) Avoid greasy foods or things that may upset your stomach. This can accentuate nausea & make it worse.
🥓

11) Hydrate. Hydration starts days in advance, and remember caffeine makes hydration more difficult. I know coffee in the morning is crucial, but try to moderate it a bit if you might get seasick).
☕️

9) Use the “vehicle motion cues” feature now on iPhones (it may be coming or already exist for other smartphones). Everything helps.
📲

10) Get back on n the water! It may be miserable putting gear back on and dealing with literally anything, but usually this helps or even eliminates it!
*Try to get down & stay deep as long as you safely can, as the surge near the surface can also be a trigger.
🌊

11) If you must puke on the surface, try to go over the side as far as possible toward the back. Points for distance, the fish will be happy.
⚠️ If you must puke underwater, you should actually keep your regulator in your mouth. Once you’re done, you can purge it afterward to clear any nasty out.
🤮

12) If you are still battling this, or puke regularly adter surfacing, contact DAN Medical Services, it’s free and they can troubleshoor your issues!
