Last year, during Antarctica Defense Campaign, we captured rare images of southern right whales in the waters of the South Orkney Islands. 🐋💙
When we shared these images with Dr. Matt Germishuizen, a specialist in this species, the reaction was immediate: observations of this species in these waters are very rare and special.
Yet highlight that southern right whales may also face direct competition with krill fishing vessels; extracting krill for unnecessary omega 3 supplements in one of the most important feeding grounds for whales and Antarctic wildlife.
This year, Dr. Matt Germishuizen joined the Allankay as part of the independent science team.
Onboard, he is documenting these waters through dedicated research and transects, helping reveal their true ecological importance and what happens when intense krill extraction overlaps with whale presence.
We are only beginning to understand what is really at stake.
