Sixteen questions. Answered before the adventure began.
Before the Golden Globe Race 2026 started, we asked each skipper to record their answers to the same set of 16 questions. Recorded before departure, these videos capture their thoughts, expectations and emotions before setting off alone around the world.
We’ll be releasing more over the coming weeks, so subscribe to catch the next skipper.
In this episode, Daniel Pinsky takes his turn.
“It’s not about the boat. It’s about the person in the boat. And I think I have what is needed to finish.”
For Daniel, reaching the start line was already the result of years of dreaming, preparation and determination.
His inspiration began with the books of Bernard Moitessier and Robin Knox-Johnston, and that dream eventually brought him to Les Sables d’Olonne to prepare for a solo, non-stop voyage around the world.
Daniel talks openly about the huge amount of preparation and equipment required for the GGR, his plans for managing sleep, and why it would take something very serious — a rollover, sinking or dismasting — to make him consider stopping.
He also reveals a few details about life aboard:
📚 Around 30–40 books
🎵 Around 40–50 cassette tapes
🍺 Roughly one beer a day, plus some wine and rum for special occasions
🦆 A little duck given to him by friends
📖 A Bible given to him by a friend
❄️ And a warm sleeping bag with a hot-water bottle for the cold Southern Ocean nights
But behind all the preparation is something much bigger — the dream.
Daniel also credits the team who came to Les Sables d’Olonne to help him reach the start line:
“Without them, it would have been much, much more difficult.”
And what did he expect to feel when finally leaving the marina?
“I think it will be one of the most emotional days of my life.”
🎥 16 questions. One skipper. One dream becoming reality.
Follow Daniel and the entire fleet as the Golden Globe Race 2026 continues around the world.
