A proposed project will bring a 48" pipeline and a new liquid natural gas processing facility (one of the largest in North America) to the Gulf of California. Then the project will use hundreds of tankers per year to move the liquid natural gas through the Gulf, through incredibly valuable and sensitive ocean waters where whales and dolphins live, and where communities of people depend upon the sea. Jean-Michel Cousteau says NO to liquid natural gas in the Gulf of California!

Goliath Groupers have been protected in Florida waters since 1990. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) will be meeting on May 12, 2021 to discuss their recommendation to lift this protection and allow for harvest of this species.

These vulnerable and iconic fish, that can reach 8 feet (2.5 m) in length and weigh 800 pounds (360 kg), need to be protected for the health of the ocean and for future generations. It is no longer appropriate to allow people to take these fish for their personal pleasure or for food. We need to protect them in perpetuity like we do for turtles, manatees, dolphins and whales.

The proposal to allow a harvest is not based on science. Leading Goliath Grouper scientists Dr. Felicia C. Coleman, Dr. Christopher C. Koenig and Dr. Christopher R. Malinowski all believe that populations of Goliath Grouper are still struggling to recover because of mortality events caused by recurring red tides and historic cold weather events, limited healthy mangrove habitat, and poor water quality necessary for their young to survive. They also state that high levels of mercury in Goliath Groupers can present severe consequences to people that eat them, and causes harm to the fish themselves.

If you would like to provide a public comment against opening the Goliath Grouper harvest you can use this link before May 7th to provide a comment for consideration during the May 12th Commission Meeting:

Jacques Cousteau called the Sea of Cortez "The Aquarium of the World." The rich oceanographic conditions support an amazing variety and abundance of sea life and the surrounding desert landscape provides an experience like few other places in the world. It truly is a natural wonder of the planet. Enjoy this video that was made to promote Jean-Michel Cousteau's desire to return to shoot a 3D Imax film - which he did within a year. Enjoy!

Dear Friends and Supporters,

I was so pleased recently to see a new mural on a building nearby my office. The mural has a painting of two hands entwined along with a quote from the late, great Nelson Mandela. It reads,

“No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”

― Nelson Mandela, Long Walk to Freedom

I am touched so greatly by this beautiful, articulate message and its placement in my community. We can all be taught to love. We can all be inspired to be a better version of ourselves. By working together, we can accomplish more than if we are working against each other.

In the ocean and on land, from the smallest to the largest plants and animals, everything is connected. When there is greater diversity of species the system is stronger because there are more species to perform vital roles. When there is less diversity the system is weaker because the web of life can be more easily disrupted or broken.

As humans, we are the only species that has the privilege to decide not to disappear. Each of us can make a difference and we can decide to protect the ocean and our planet so that all of us and future generations can enjoy a healthy planet.

Diversity also makes us stronger too. By incorporating and celebrating different cultures, ethnicities, religions, genders and people of all ages, we can benefit from a wider range of thinking and solutions. Diversity is synonymous with stability.

I hope you will join me and my efforts to work with others to find solutions to our problems. I remind us not to point a finger, because when we do we have three fingers pointing back. Lets work together!

With warm regards,
Jean-Michel Cousteau

After the largest return of captive orcas and belugas to the ocean off Russia was completed during 2019, there are recent reports that some belugas are interacting with humans in the area. Local observers are assuming that these whales are members of that group. Jean-Michel Cousteau's Ocean Futures Society and The Whale Sanctuary produced this PSA to help people understand that we need to minimize our contact with these wild belugas to help keep them natural and wild. Belugas that interact with humans and water craft can develop habits that can lead to injury and poor health. As Jean-Michel says, "Lets Help Belugas Stay Natural and Wild."

A message from Jean-Michel Cousteau

Many places across the Earth are experiencing the effects of climate change. Bushfires are burning out of control in Australia following their hottest and driest year ever recorded. More than 17.9 million acres have burned, 28 people have died and as many as 500 million animals have been killed. The loss of life and property is heartbreaking.

Scientists believe that ocean currents are changing due to the effects of climate change. Changes in ocean currents can make some areas on Earth drier and hotter while other areas will receive more rainfall and even historic flooding. One study predicts that as global temperatures rise and warm the oceans that extreme weather could become more frequent.

Australia is already vulnerable to climate change because of its vast arid lands and variable rainfall. But scientists predict it could get worse in Australia if winds in the Indian Ocean continue to push warm surface water away from Australia and towards Africa. The result is cooler water near Australia and less rainfall, and warmer water near Africa and more rainfall and record flooding.

To slow the temperature increase on our planet and oceans we need to reduce our use of fossil fuels. And we need to invest in renewable energy to reduce levels of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. We can reforest areas to help absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. And we can change our diets to eat foods whose production contributes less to climate change.

Many companies recognize the need to reduce their production of greenhouse gases and are making needed changes. Smart consumers and investors are rewarding these companies and avoiding those that are not adapting.

Solving our current climate crises means that we will be protecting our quality of life and the quality of life for future generations. I hope you will join me on this important journey.

Jean-Michel Cousteau is grateful that the Government of Russia and the Russian people supported the return of 10 orcas and 87 belugas back into their natural habitat following their illegal capture and holding in the Whale Jail. He also calls on all countries to ban the capture of cetaceans for the entertainment industry.
