LAUNCHING NOW IN AUSTRALIA: The Australian Sea Lion Defence Campaign.
After the resounding success of Operation Jeedara, we’re returning to the Great Australian Bight to defend, conserve, and protect one of Australia’s most endangered marine species — the Australian sea lion.
Once hunted for their fur, these iconic marine mammals have suffered a staggering 60% decline in just four decades, leading to their up-listing from ‘Vulnerable’ to ‘Endangered’ under Australian environmental law. Now, with climate change, habitat destruction, bycatch, and pollution threatening their survival, urgent action is needed.
What We’re Doing:
Conducting vital pup surveys to monitor population health
Exploring artificial shelters for thermal relief to reduce pup mortality
Using drone technology to assess body condition
Restoring critical habitat for the species’ recovery
Like we’ve done in Africa and Tuvalu, Sea Shepherd Australia is stepping up, providing a boat and crew supporting Australian sea lion recovery efforts and the protection of vast areas of marine wildlife habitat alongside the South Australia Department for Environment and Water’s National Parks and Wildlife Service.
With your support, we can help give these sea lions the chance to thrive. Stay tuned for updates from the field.
