“Every day that you’re at sea, it’s dangerous.” — Guy deBoer
Words spoken before the start of the 2026 McIntyre Golden Globe Race that now carry a deeper meaning.
In this pre-race interview, American solo sailor Guy deBoer, skipper of SPIRIT, reflects on why he considers the Golden Globe Race one of the toughest solo, non-stop sailing challenges in the world.
Small, slow boats. Months alone at sea. Storms, ships, fishing vessels, whales and the constant uncertainty of the ocean.
Guy knew the extraordinary challenges that lay ahead.
On 7 November 2026, following a fall aboard SPIRIT in the South Atlantic, Guy requested urgent medical evacuation after reporting a deterioration in his condition.
Looking back at his words today offers a powerful reminder of the courage, determination and risks involved in taking on the Golden Globe Race.
This interview was recorded before the start of the race, not during the medical emergency.
❤️ Our thoughts are with Guy, his family and everyone involved in the rescue efforts.
