Day 4 brought another major shake-up in Japan as light but workable winds allowed Elimination 2 and most of Elimination 3 to unfold.
In the women’s fleet, Justine Lemeteyer moved a huge step closer to a second world crown. A win in Elimination 2 and a safe passage into the next Winners’ Final give her a commanding advantage, especially after Lina Eržen’s unexpected semifinal exit in elimination 3. Eržen limited the damage with a B-final win, but the points swing heavily favours Lemeteyer with one day left. Blanca Alabau remains in the hunt for vice-world champion after a strong second in Elimination 2, but jumping the gun in Elimination 3 will limit the gains she makes when this result drops in. Further down, Marion Mortefon and Femke van der Veen climbed the order today to take 4th & 5th respectively.
In the men’s fleet, Søe remains untouchable at the top of the event rankings with a perfect record, but he is not part of the title equation. The world title race sits firmly between Matteo Iachino and Pierre Mortefon – and the pressure is climbing by the minute. The pair are tied on points after matching results, but the maths is simple – for Mortefon to win the world title from where he sits now (2nd in Japan), he needs to beat Iachino and see the Italian drop to sixth or worse in the overall event standings. With Iachino currently in a strong position and sailing cleanly, Mortefon faces a monumental challenge tomorrow. Maciek Rutkowski strengthened his grip on third overall, while emerging talents Bob van de Burgt, Scotty Stallman and Elia Colombo all punched into their first Winners’ Final of the week.
With stronger southwest winds forecast for the final day, everything is set for a thrilling showdown. Event glory for Søe looks likely, but the world title fight remains wide open – and tomorrow will decide it all.
