INEOS Britannia T6 Day 49 Summary

Sir Ben Ainslie came back to Palma today to join the sailing team and thoroughly test through the new foil configurations on ‘T6’ the INEOS Britannia LEQ12 prototype testing platform. In a wide-ranging interview with the Recon Team, Ben gives his views on what he describes as this ‘critical period’ in the America’s Cup cycle and highlights some of the interesting foil and technical developments as teams zero-in on their design thinking for the one-build AC75s that will shortly go into production worldwide in the coming few weeks.

Ben also offers his unique perspective on the British challenge, very much reiterating the point that this period is one for test and analysis as was shown on the water today as he and Giles Scott pushed the new foil through a myriad of trim and pitch settings, pushing to the outer limits to extract the maximum data. Ben also offers his views on the upcoming preliminary regatta in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and the huge opportunity that presents for the America’s Cup as an event.

A must-see video after another solid, ‘workmanlike’ day on the Bay of Palma with the British team looking increasingly comfortable with their programme and delivering results for the design team and engineers of Mercedes Applied Science.

Section 41. Reconnaissance

a) As a campaign cost reduction measure, COR/D has mutually agreed to cooperatively implement a centralised reconnaissance programme for all teams for the reconnaissance of all Competitors’ AC75 Yachts, AC40 Yachts and LEQ12 yachts including both on-land and on-water imagery (the “Joint Recon Programme”).

b) Each team is assigned a two-person Recon Unit to follow their every on-water move, but it’s not that simple. The cameras are supplied and identical for all Recon Units. Drones are not allowed, and they can’t get that close, plus following a boat and keeping a camera steady at 45 knots isn’t that easy to begin with.

c) A three minute interview follows each on water day, and teams must answer the Recon Unit’s questions while trying not to give too much away. It’s a raw, unedited view of the never before seen behind-the-scenes development of a team and their boat to win the oldest trophy in international sports.
