“We are the ocean and the ocean is us.” 🌊
For Tuvalu, the ocean is far more than the water surrounding its islands. It is food, livelihood, culture, knowledge and identity, passed from one generation to the next.
But protecting it is an enormous challenge.
Tuvalu is a small island nation responsible for policing a vast area of the South Pacific. Illegal fishing vessels can take advantage of those distances, operating far from shore and putting both marine ecosystems and the communities that depend on them at risk.
Two years ago, Sea Shepherd Global began working with the Government of Tuvalu to strengthen its ability to fight illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing at sea.
This year, that partnership reached an important milestone.
What happened next didn’t just result in the first vessel arrest under our partnership. It sent a message across the water.
