We know how to train divers. But who is training the people responsible for the future of diving?

Meet Dr. Simon Caruana, our next speaker in Let’s Talk About Diving.

With more than three decades of experience spanning education, technology and tourism development, Simon is Director of the Centre of Contemporary Tourism and Research at the Institute of Tourism Studies in Malta.

His work is helping bring something increasingly important to the diving industry: higher education dedicated specifically to diving safety, management and sustainable diving tourism.

Simon oversees the academic development of the International School of Dive Safety Medicine, created through a partnership between ITS and DAN Europe, including programmes such as the Bachelor of Science in Diving Safety Management.

At Diving Talks 2026, Simon brings a perspective that goes beyond how we dive. He invites us to think about how diving is managed, how professionals are educated, how destinations develop diving tourism responsibly, and how safety and sustainability can become part of the industry’s academic foundations.

🎥 Watch Simon’s introduction and tell us: Does the diving industry need more formal education for the people who will manage and lead its future?

"Let’s Talk About Diving" is a speaker introduction series leading up to Diving Talks 2026, where some of the most respected voices in the underwater world come together to share ideas, stories, and inspiration.
