Alinghi Red Bull Racing BoatZero Day 63 Summary

After a stunning session for Alinghi Red Bull Racing out in Barcelona in a thermal ‘Garbi’ breeze that delivered a solid 12-15 knots all afternoon, Arnaud Psarofaghis came to the interview brimming with confidence and very much focused on the immediate future. With two AC40s now in their possession, the coming days will see race-practice and two-boat testing (one of the team’s AC40s is now in LEQ12 development mode), alternating with the AC75 programme that today took a significant step forward.

Arnaud offers his insight into where the team are in the overall programme and looks forward to the move into the new permanent team base further down in the Port Vell as well as offering a clue as to who the fourth helmsman might be in the AC40s when they start the race programme. He also talks through the search for ‘consistency’ in the AC75 which still, at times, looks a wet boat through the manoeuvres but is something that the team are very much getting to grips with, as well as perfecting the fast bear-aways and controlled round-ups at the windward and leeward gates that the team looked imperious at today on the water.

Best day to date for Alinghi Red Bull Racing with plenty of concentration on the profile through the tacks and gybes yielding their most positive foil-to-foil numbers.

Section 41. Reconnaissance

a) As a campaign cost reduction measure, COR/D has mutually agreed to cooperatively implement a centralised reconnaissance programme for all teams for the reconnaissance of all Competitors’ AC75 Yachts, AC40 Yachts and LEQ12 yachts including both on-land and on-water imagery (the “Joint Recon Programme”).

b) Each team is assigned a two-person Recon Unit to follow their every on-water move, but it’s not that simple. The cameras are supplied and identical for all Recon Units. Drones are not allowed, and they can’t get that close, plus following a boat and keeping a camera steady at 45 knots isn’t that easy to begin with.

c) A three minute interview follows each on water day, and teams must answer the Recon Unit’s questions while trying not to give too much away. It’s a raw, unedited view of the never before seen behind-the-scenes development of a team and their boat to win the oldest trophy in international sports.
