Dr. Simon Caruana is an experienced academic and tourism education leader with a career spanning over three decades in education, information technology, and tourism development. He holds a PhD from the University of Leeds.
Since 2025, Dr. Caruana has served as Director of the Centre of Contemporary Tourism and Research at the Institute of Tourism Studies (ITS), Malta. He is responsible for overseeing e-learning policies, coordinating research activities, and fostering collaborations with local and international stakeholders.
One of his most significant contributions is the development of specialized programmes related to diving tourism management and underwater operations. As Director of the Centre of Contemporary Tourism, he oversees the academic development of the International School of Dive Safety Medicine (ISDSM), established through a partnership between ITS and DAN Europe. This includes higher education programmes focused on the management, safety, and sustainability of diving tourism. One example is the Bachelor of Science in Diving Safety Management.
He is an active member of the E-assessment Association, IACUDIT, and PADI, reflecting his commitment to innovation, cultural tourism, and marine environments.
