Sofia Sokolowski-Wojnicki has built her career around answering that question.
A medical doctor and PhD researcher in Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine, Sofia investigates how the human body responds to the unique physiological challenges of diving. Her research focuses on oxygen toxicity, adaptation to diving stress, and the physiology of closed circuit rebreather (CCR) divers, contributing to a deeper understanding of diver safety and performance.
Raised in Finland’s diving community, Sofia has been immersed in cold-water diving since childhood. From freshwater lakes and quarries to the Baltic Sea, her personal diving experience complements her scientific work, giving her a unique perspective that bridges research and real-world diving.
At Diving Talks 2026, Sofia will share how cutting-edge research is helping us better understand the effects of oxygen exposure, cold-water diving, and the physiological adaptations that every diver should know about. Whether you’re a recreational diver, technical diver, instructor, or simply fascinated by human performance underwater, her insights will change the way you think about diving.
