Dive With Us: SS Rose Castle | Exploring a WWII Shipwreck

Come dive the SS Rose Castle with us.

No narration. No talking. Just the sound of our bubbles, the North Atlantic, and gentle atmospheric music as we explore one of the historic WWII shipwrecks lying beneath the waters off Bell Island, Newfoundland.

The SS Rose Castle was a Canadian steam merchant carrying iron ore when she was attacked by the German submarine U-518 on November 2, 1942. Torpedoes struck the ship while she lay anchored in Conception Bay, sending her to the bottom and claiming the lives of 24 members of her crew.

Today, the Rose Castle rests in deeper water off Bell Island, covered in marine life and standing as both an extraordinary dive site and a memorial to those who were lost.

For this dive, we wanted to give you the feeling of actually being there with us, descending onto the wreck, moving through its massive structures and discovering what has become an incredible underwater ecosystem.

And as our dive comes to an end, we ascend from the Rose Castle into an incredible school of beautiful moon jellyfish, surrounding us in the blue-green waters of Conception Bay.

We’re once again diving with our friends at Ocean Quest Adventures, specialists in exploring the four historic Bell Island WWII wrecks, the SS Saganaga, SS Lord Strathcona, SS Rose Castle and PLM-27.
