Five years ago today, 1,428 Atlantic white-sided dolphins were driven ashore and killed at Skálabotnur in the Faroe Islands.
To mark World Dolphin Day and the beginning of Dolphin Week, actor Clive Standen, known for his role in Vikings, stood on the beach where the largest recorded massacre of dolphins took place.
The tide may have erased every visible trace of that day, but we have not forgotten. 🐬
The grindadráp continues to kill dolphins and pilot whales in the name of tradition. These intelligent, deeply social animals live in close family groups, and when a pod is driven ashore, entire families can be slaughtered together.
Today, we remember the 1,428 and stand with the local voices calling for change. Throughout Dolphin Week, we will also raise awareness of the threats facing dolphins worldwide.
