Gabon has created one of the largest networks of marine protected areas in Africa, with almost a quarter of its waters under protection. These waters are among the richest on the continent, warm thanks to the the equator and nourished by powerful rivers that carry sediments into the sea. This richness is exactly why poachers target the protected zones, and why our presence at sea with the Gabonese authorities is essential.
For nine years, the Albacore campaign has worked to detect, stop, and expose illegal fishing in Gabonese waters. The work is continuous and the threat is real.
