Hunting the Pirate King: The Search Begins in England

The hunt for Henry Avery begins in England.

In Episode 1 of The Mystery of the Pirate King’s Treasure, Dr. Sean Kingsley and Chris Atkins begin their search for one of history’s most elusive pirates, Henry Avery, the Pirate King.

Our journey starts in London at Paternoster Square, near the heart of the city’s historic publishing world, where Avery’s legend was first immortalized in A General History of the Pyrates. From there, we head down to the low-tide foreshore of the River Thames, where mudlarker Monika Buttling-Smith reveals remarkable finds pulled from the mud, fragments of London’s maritime past still hiding in plain sight.

Then the trail leads west to Plymouth, one of England’s great seafaring ports. There, we meet Mal Haas, who helps connect the story of Plymouth, Francis Drake, Henry Avery, and the bold maritime culture that shaped the men who sailed from this historic harbour.

Before Avery became the most wanted pirate on earth, his story began here — in the ports, streets, rivers, and legends of England.

This is where the hunt begins.

Watch as we follow the trail of Henry Avery from London and Plymouth to the Bahamas in the first-ever archaeological search for the lost pirate world of Nassau and the mystery of Avery’s ship, The Fancy.
