Seals are among the animals we love most. But that face belongs to a top predator with a skull bigger than a wolf’s, teeth built for shearing flesh, and a temperament nobody puts on a postcard.
On the breeding beaches, bulls twice the weight of the females fight for hours until the snow runs red. In the high Arctic, mothers carve nurseries into the ice while polar bears walk directly over their pups. In the Mediterranean, the rarest seal on Earth raises her young alone in a sea cave. And out on a temperate reef, a chance recording from a passenger’s phone captured something that changed how biologists think about this entire family.
From grey seals and harp seals to ringed seals, harbour seals and the two-ton walrus, this documentary follows more than 30 species through courtship, birth, survival and the hunt — and asks what we have been missing about the animals we thought we understood.
