💯 Number of dives really doesn’t matter. It’s FREQUENCY, RECENCY, & HOW LONG… all of those, in that order. ⏳Certifications are temporary, even if they’re not. 💀DOGMA is DEADLY No gear is always best, no agency is always the best for every person in every situation, no teaching method is always one-size-fits all “Only the Sith deal in absolutes” 🧐 Focus LESS on the open water course, more on immediately after: Most divers are nowhere near prepared after the Open Water course. Even with great training & if they get it, it simply isn’t enough diving/time to bake in. The trick is to schedule lots of dives right after, plan them as if THAT is the purpose of the OW course, not the course itself. 😎EGO is your only enemy underwater.(It’s not gear or animals) Being too scared to speak up, or too complacent to respect the rules is what gets divers hurt 🛟Diving isn’t as dangerous as many believe, IF you follow the basic rules. 🥰Many divers have a toxic relationship with the first gear they find that works. Never stop trying new things. 📖Academics are largely a waste of precious time in the initial Open Water course. The more bottom time, the more likelihood of success: after that, academics start to truly matter. 👯A dive buddy doesn’t always guarantee safety, it can even be the opposite. (IE: an instructor in the first checkout dive is not diving with a certified diver, & that student can be more of a liability than a safety asset. ⚙️Tech Diving isn’t “going all the way”, but that doesn’t mean it cant be. Teaching, leading, research diving, organizing trips… each has their own “all the way”. ALL are good. 🙉Almost all debates I hear [agency, gear, teaching techniques, brands] stem from a lack of understanding, different environments, priorities, & context. 🌏DIVING ENVIRONMENT is everything. From teaching to expertise, the more varied the environment, the faster a diver hones their craft. What works in one place may be dangerous in another. 🎥A great diver can more easily learn to shoot video / photo… the opposite is not true. 🫶 New divers aren’t stupid. They are me (all of us) so once upon a time.

Most divers are particular about their gear, so it’s super hard to buy for them anyway. And let’s face it, gift cards can sometimes feel a little too impersonal. SOLUTION: One thing that every diver wants to do…? Dive! Get them diving. Experiences always win, and they happen later so it’s like getting to give the gift twice! Talk to your local dive shop or charter boat and see about booking them a trip, or even a class. Ask their instructor what certifications or trips they may have expressed interest in.  Many divers, even experienced ones, love taking new specialty courses. If you absolutely dont know what to get, here are a few more: Spare dive light. Spare dive knife or line cutter. Save-a-dive kit Weight bag (if they own their own weights) Tank fill checker (If they own tanks) Portable Oxygen Analyzer (pricier but can be really handy) GPS locator that can dive (Nautilus and Garmin both make a good one) which prevents a diver from ever becoming lost.  But no matter what, they’re probably wanting to go diving.
Defogging a mask has two parts that often get confused with one another: 1) The initial prep when it’s new, or after sitting for a long time (scrubbing the inside of the lens to remove any residual silicone coating or gunk). 2) Defog. ANY defog works, it’s all about how well it’s applied, and whether it gets rinsed too much by the time you’re actually wearing it underwater. 🤿 Mistake No 1) Applying defog with little pools of water in the mask. It will not stick, and literally floats around while applying, getting too watered down. 💦 Mistake No 2) Over rinsing (ya gotta leave a thin layer in it for it to work). 💆‍♀️ Mistake No 3) Once it’s good, many divers go to make one last adjustment, or slick their hair out of their face. Not realizing it’s getting dunked below the water again and losing defog. Most of the time I would catch this, they didn’t realize the were even doing it. If none of that seems to work, it may need more initial prep: most ppl are scared to scrub it as hard as they need to, fearing they’ll scratch the mask. The reality is that they likely won’t. I’ve even seen someone use sand and water, and it didn’t scratch at all. Prep the mask when ya get it. Use whatever defog ya want, master the right amount of rinsing, and you’ll be ready to hit the water free and clear of that foggy mask 👀👌💦
