On September 5, 1942, the British cargo steamer SS Lord Strathcona was anchored off Bell Island, Newfoundland, loaded with iron ore, when she was attacked by the German submarine U-513.
Struck by torpedoes during the devastating Bell Island raid, the ship sank to the bottom of Conception Bay. Remarkably, all 44 crew members survived.
Built in 1915 in Sunderland, England, the Lord Strathcona now rests beneath the waters off Bell Island and remains one of Newfoundland and Labrador’s most fascinating wreck-diving sites.
