8 excited crew from our Sea Shepherd Australia Marine Debris Campaign recently returned to Groote Eylandt for the third time to work alongside the Anindilyakwa Land and Sea Rangers. Groote Eylandt, the largest island in the Gulf of Carpentaria and the fourth largest in Australia, is located around 630 kilometers east of Darwin. The Anindilyakwa people have been caring for Groote Eylandt for over 8,000 years, speaking the unique Amamalya Ayakwa language, one of the strongest Indigenous languages in Australia. Our dedicated crew worked in this culturally rich environment alongside the local Rangers to remove over 3 tonnes of pollution from 10 kilometers (about the height of Mount Everest) of coastline. This campaign was funded as part of the Ghost Nets Innovative Solutions Grant from the Australia Government. We’re grateful to the Traditional Custodians for granting us access to their cultural lands. We look forward to returning next year to continue protecting these precious environments! In October, our Marine Debris Crew, working with the Dhimurru Land and Sea Rangers, removed 10.98 tonnes of plastic pollution from Yalangbara in North-East Arnhem Land. Since 2018, we have been helping the Dhimurru Rangers remove plastic pollution from Djulpan, an important turtle nesting beach. Last year, we finally reached the end of the 14 km beach! This year, at the request of the Traditional Owners, we started cleaning up a new beach called Yalangbara, a culturally significant area for the Yolngu people and another critical nesting beach for marine turtles. Sadly, this important beach has been massively impacted by the tide of plastic pollution that washes up from the Arafura Sea. But thanks to the hard work of the rangers and crew, this beautiful beach has been returned to the pristine condition it deserves, allowing turtles who come to nest here to do so free from the threats of plastic pollution. Over 6,500 illegal octopus traps and 52,000 meters of rope were removed from #Greece’s Thracian Sea! Our vessels M/V Emanuel Bronner and M/V Conrad, working with local authorities, rescued over 571 octopuses and tackled #plasticpollution to protect this vital ecosystem. The Thracian Sea is one of the most fertile marine ecosystems in the #Mediterranean, home to endangered species and essential to the health of our #oceans. At Sea Shepherd Australia we believe in collaboration. During our recent campaign, eager students from Shepherdson College's Learning on Country Program joined forces with Gumurr Marthakal Rangers to clean up the beaches of Elcho Island, Arnhem Land. This collaboration demonstrated the power of two-way learning, with the rangers generously sharing their stories and knowledge of Country with the students and Sea Shepherd crew. The project showcased the benefits of Yolŋu and Balanda working together to protect these special coastlines. #Tuvalu’s waters are a vital biodiversity hotspot, home to #sharks, #mantarays, and essential spawning grounds for various #tuna species. They also serve as a key migratory route for bluefin tuna heading to the Sea of Japan. However, the booming demand for tuna is driving illegal fishing in the area, which devastates marine life and disrupts local livelihoods.
