Secrets of the Night – When the Earth Stopped Going Dark | 4K Documentary

For most of human history the night meant darkness, danger and rest. Then we learned to harness fire and invented the electric light – and in just a few centuries we turned night into day. This documentary traces the conquest of the night, from the first electrified street lamp in Hamburg in 1882 to today’s glowing megacities, where artificial light has become a symbol of power, wealth and round-the-clock work.

We explore how light pollution is erasing real darkness almost everywhere, growing by roughly two percent worldwide every year and disrupting the lives of insects, birds and entire ecosystems. We look at the science of sleep and circadian rhythm: how melatonin governs our nights, why so many of us wake during the so-called hour of the wolf, and what happened when a German company let its employees work for six months without alarm clocks. Along the way we visit night runs, illuminated ski slopes, Berlin’s late-night spätis, the harbour of Hamburg, the festivals of light from Berlin to Thailand, and the shift workers who keep our just-in-time world running while the rest of us sleep. A journey through the darkness – and the light that conquered it.
