For 40 years, AIMS’ Long-Term Monitoring Program has been collecting data across the Reef in a robust and repeatable way. Our annual reports are an essential and trusted resource for governments, those involved in the Reef’s management and protection, and anyone with an interest in the health of the Great Barrier Reef.
The latest report is based on 135 days spent at sea by AIMS researchers, visiting 121 reefs in total between August 2025 and June 2026.
So, how is the Reef looking this year?
The Great Barrier Reef is showing signs of recovery, with hard coral cover across all three regions increasing slightly or remaining close to last year’s levels. This is encouraging following the steep declines in coral cover recorded after 2024’s mass bleaching event.
However, the Reef remains under pressure from climate change and other disturbances (like crown-of-thorns starfish outbreaks and cyclones). Its long-term resilience depends on global emissions reduction, strong management of local impacts, and the development of science-based interventions that support reef adaptation and recovery.
