30 tanks of coral. 10 different temperatures

What do we know about how corals grow at different temperatures on the Great Barrier Reef? More than ever before, thanks to research made possible in AIMS’ National Sea Simulator (SeaSim).

Understanding corals on the Reef is complex: there are hundreds of species, often living in quite different conditions, across a reef system a bit longer than the western coast of the United States.

Gathering scientific data on how corals in different locations perform at different temperatures is a huge task in the wild. This is made simpler by SeaSim, which allows us to grow and study corals in tanks set to precise environmental conditions.

Ecosystem ecologist Juan Ortiz explains how experiments using 30 SeaSim tanks set at different temperature increments allowed us to expand our knowledge on this key question for a warming world.
