Counting coral trout – what’s it all about? 🤿🐟
AIMS’ Long-term Monitoring Program has been consistently recording data on the Great Barrier Reef for the past 40 years. Since the 1990s, an important part of this has been recording coral trout numbers and size.
Coral trout are a legitimate Reef icon. Big fish, good eating, popular with divers and fishers alike. They are also key predators essential for the functioning of the reef ecosystem.
In this video, AIMS fish ecologist Dr Daniela Ceccarelli explains how and why the LTMP team monitors trout populations. These data have helped us understand the links between protected areas where fish cannot be caught (known as ‘green zones’) and the increased numbers of fish in ‘blue zones’ where fishers can operate.
