Pink zones and windy weather – LTMP’s last reef trip of the season

And that’s it for the 2025/26 season! Fieldwork is complete for our Long-Term Monitoring Program (LTMP) on the Great Barrier Reef. The final reef has been surveyed, transect traversed, fish counted, and manta towed.

For the next few weeks the team are back on land, crunching the data and making sense of the Reef’s condition for our annual report in August.

This final 20-day field trip visited 21 reefs across four different sectors of the Great Barrier Reef, in the central and northern regions.

A highlight was visiting highly protected ‘pink zones’, experiencing an abundance of life. These havens are even off limits to our main research vessel, the RV Cape Ferguson, and our researchers have to complete their final approach in smaller tenders.
